Fire in the Valley!
Dutch Colonization and Contribution to Fire Safety in the Hudson Valley

This exhibit explores the Dutch experience and their contributions to fire safety in their New World colony of New Netherland, which included the Hudson River Valley area.

Discover why the Dutch came here, how they lived here and how they interacted with the Native American people already living here. Learn about Peter Stuyvesant or "Peg Leg Pete,” the Director General (or Governor) of the Dutch colony of New Netherland. Stuyvesant arrived at the colony in 1647, and became the organizer of the first volunteer firemen in what would later become the United States of America. Discover objects the Dutch would have used in their daily life at the touch table in the exhibit.

Learn about the only method available to the Dutch to fight fires: the bucket brigade. Explore what it would have taken for the Dutch to fight fires using this method by participating in the bucket brigade interactive in the exhibit. Discover the devices the Dutch used to fight fire, including leather buckets and wooden fire rattles and examine these artifacts on exhibit.
